Cheetah is possibly the best day ever.
We worked with a man called Alan. He is the most hilarious man. He has worked with Cheetahs for over 30 years. He joked around with us all day and we keeps saying: Alan Alan Alan Alan. Oh no Steve Steve Steve. So amusing.
The day started bright and early with a trip into the closest town to visit the vet. One of the cheetahs has been limping with a sore foot. An X-ray at the vet confirmed a couple of small fractures.
It was an experience not many people can say they have seen. A cheetah having a cast out in its foot. (The vets had tranquillised the cheetah first for him to sleep through this).
Once back at a Ukutula we had to clean out the cheetahs cage and move others around to allow for the injured cheetah to be comfortable.
The real excitement started after lunch. When we got to feed the cheetahs. Alan had us throwing chickens over fences and then he told us we were going into the cages. This was slightly terrifying.
When cheetahs feel threatened they stamp both front feet on the ground and hiss/spit at you. Gave me a fright every time this happened.
Alan then had us lye down in the ground and he placed chickens in front of us about 50cms from our faces. The cheetahs then sprinted up, grabbed the chicken and ran away. Being this close to the cheetahs when getting their prey was unbelievable. Alan ensured we were safe however.
Cheetahs are interesting as if the are in the wild they would rather take flight than fight something.
We were able to take amazing photos and videos.
There are also cheetah cubs on the farm. Some a few months old and others a few weeks old. These guys are playful and enjoy it when you kick around a ball (also perfect for taking selfies)
The younger Cubs seemed to enjoy nibbling at hats and licking faces. One of them decided my stomach was a great place to sit.
Alan also looks after the caracal cat. This is friendly just like a household cat but enjoys jumping for whole chickens.
Best day ever!!
